Further Research into the Genre of Thriller

Thriller is, as previously mentioned, a specific genre of film. However, at present, most films fit into multiple genres and as such it will be useful to me to look at all of the different sub genres that thriller can fit into.

Conspiracy Thriller

Where the protagonist discovers a mass conspiracy that 'goes all the way to the top' and the story follows their attempts to reveal it. Examples include: Salt (Philip Noyce, 2010), Valkyrie (Bryan Singer, 2008) and North By Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, 1959).

Crime Thriller

A suspenseful account of successful or failed crimes that usually focus around the criminal but can sometimes revolve around the investigator. Examples include: 'Se7en' (David Fincher, 1995), 'The Silence of the Lambs' (Jonathan Demme, 1991) and 'Reservoir Dogs' (Quentin Tarantino, 1992).

Mystery Thriller

Where the protagonist must solve or be involved in a mystery. Examples include: Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese, 2010), Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958) and Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2000).

Psychological Thriller

In these types of thrillers, the conflict between characters is on an emotional level rather than physical danger. The characters are reliant on their mental resources and must use these to overcome the problems. Examples include: Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky, 2010), Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) and Unbreakable (M. Night Shyamalan, 2000).

Other sub genres include: Disaster Thriller, Erotic Thriller, Legal Thriller, Medical Thriller, Political Thriller, Rape and Revenge Thriller, Religious Thriller, Supernatural Thriller and Techno Thriller.

For my two minute Thriller I believe that I would be more successful trying to aim it at the sub genres that I have discussed as they will be the easiest to replicate as they do not require any complicated special effects or knowledge. If anything, I think that if I do things correctly, I should be able to create a really decent psychological mystery thriller opening sequence.
